Intro

After living in Japan for nearly two years, I finally had the opportunity to return home to Dallas in August! I had big expectations, excited to enjoy local nature. To my shock, I completely forgot about the unbearable temperatures of Texas summers. Faced with daily records nearing 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 Celsius), I enjoyed some unforgettable indoor activities instead. Here are my favorites.

Dancing at Guitars and Cadillacs (Fort Worth)

Growing up, I was never especially appreciative of local culture, but many of my friends have since become regular patrons of western country clubs, perfecting their Texas two step and line dancing. It was a thrill to enjoy this for myself at Fort Worth’s Guitars and Cadillacs. The venue offers a welcoming atmosphere, massive 2,500 square foot (232 square meter) dance floor, cheap drinks, and dance lessons too. It’s a great time. Entry price varies by event.

Shopping at NorthPark Center (Dallas)

Opened by local art collectors Raymond and Patsy Nasher in 1965, NorthPark Center remains the largest mall in Dallas. In addition to a variety of unique shops, NorthPark features world-class art curated by the Nasher Sculpture Center downtown. It’s my favorite place in DFW to walk, window-shop, and grab a bite. Don’t miss the central garden! There are also frequent pop-ups and events to enjoy.

Admiring the Dallas Arts District

The Dallas Arts District is the beating heart of downtown. Enjoy a performance of ballet, opera, or orchestra, or simply walk through one of the area’s many excellent museums such as the Crow Museum of Asian Art or the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA). Price varies by show and exhibition; the DMA’s general admission is free.

Swimming at Epic Waters Waterpark (Grand Prairie)

The largest indoor waterpark in Texas, Epic Waters, was named one of America’s best this year by the media company USA Today. Guests can enjoy towering slides, a winding lazy river, wave pool, and children’s playground. Re-entry is permitted, so you can leave for a lunch break or dine-in at the café. Tickets range from $20 to $44 (tax not included) depending on date and time. Reservation recommended. Lockers cost extra. I scored free tickets by attending an Illuvia water and light show nearby! Oh, don’t forget your towel.

Exploring Meow Wolf (Grapevine)

The viral art collective Meow Wolf has arrived in Texas! Equal parts mystery, scavenger hunt, and art installation, this new interactive exhibition offers something for everyone. I spent over three hours wandering around the surreal site, though it’s possible to stay the whole day! Take a break at the café and exit through the giftshop. Tickets range from $35 to $50 (tax not included) depending on date and time. Reservation recommended.
